Coated titanium electrodes are characterized by a conducting substrate coated with an activated oxide layer which usually catalyzes a particular electrochemical reaction. The catalysts are typically platinum group metal oxides (such as RuO2 and IrO2) mixed with other nonprecious metal components, sometimes referred to as additives (such as TiO2 and Ta5O5).
